Jesse Ponce to Perform for Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Great Performers Series to feature music from northern Mexico and Texas

April 22, 2008- Newark, OH- The Ohio State University at Newark will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a live performance from Jesse Ponce and his five-piece band. The community is invited to attend the celebration on May 5 at 7 pm in The John Gilbert Reese Center. Mexican food will be served. The entire event is free and open to the public.

 Jesse Ponce and his band will play conjunto" (also called "norteńo") an accordion-based music from northern Mexico and Texas. Ponce is originally from San Antonio, Texas, but has been a resident of Toledo, Ohio, since 1979.

Ponce is a 2005 Ohio Heritage Fellowship recipient. He currently performs with Baldemar Velasquez in the Aguila Negra Band, with Jacob Estrada and Frank Ibarra in Sal y Pimienta and as the "house musician" at the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center in Toledo. In addition to his performing activities, Ponce has long been an active and central part of the Latino community in northwestern Ohio, mentoring young musicians, working with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee and participating in countless benefit concerts.
