Accordions, Drumming and the Subsurreal
Faculty Lecture Series closes with music from Marie-Galante, French Antilles

Accordions, Drumming and the SubsurrealApril 10, 2008- Newark, OH- Ron Emoff, Ph.D., associate professor of music, will close the 2007-08 Faculty Lecture Series on Thursday, May 1, 2008 when he presents Resurrecting Place in the Non-Nation: Accordions, Drumming and the Subsurreal on Marie-Galante, French Antilles.” The series is free and open to the public and takes place in the John Gilbert Reese Center ballroom from 7 – 9 pm. A reception will follow the lecture.

An expert on the musical expression of the people of Marie-Galante (a small island situated in the Caribbean to the south of Guadeloupe inhabited largely by descendants of the slave era), Dr. Emoff will discuss how the musical practices on the island provide Marie-Galantais with a means of (re)connecting with other significant distant places, within a subsurreal milieu of dislocation and non-belonging.  The focus of Dr. Emoff’s  presentation will be upon kadril and gwo ka, two prevalent musical practices on the island with which Marie-Galantais construct unique perceptions of self in relation, specifically, to Africa and France.

Dr. Emoff will provide musical and visual samples to enhance the lecture.

Dr. Emoff is a 2003 recipient of The Ohio State University at Newark Scholarly Achievement Award; a 2003 recipient of The Ohio State University at Newark Service Award; and a 2006 recipient of The Ohio State University at Newark Teaching Excellence Award. His book, “Resurrecting Place in the Non-Nation: Accordions and Drumming on Marie-Galante, French Antilles,” published by Ashgate Press, is expected to be available in May 2008.

The Faculty Lecture Series is hosted by William L. MacDonald, Dean and Director of Ohio State Newark. For more information, please call 740.364.9635 or visit www.newark.osu.edu.
