2007-8 Faculty Lecture Series Opens with a Buzz

Karen Goodell discusses bees and pollination in a changing environment

2007-8 Faculty Lecture Series Opens with a BuzzThe Ohio State University at Newark will open its 2007 – 2008 Faculty Lecture Series on Thursday, November 1st. Karen Goodell, Ph.D., will present Buzziness as usual?  The status of bees and pollination in a changing environment. William L. MacDonald, Dean and Director of Ohio State Newark, will host the series. The series is free and open to the public and will begin at 7 pm in the Reese Center Ballroom. A reception with light refreshments will follow.

Dr. Goodell will discuss her research on one factor that influences native bee communities: the invasion of exotic plants species and show how these interactions can have cascading impacts on the reproduction of native plants and other plant species of interest, like crops.

An assistant professor in the Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at Ohio State Newark, Dr. Goodell received her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from SUNY Stony Brook in 2000 and an M.S. in Botany and Plant Sciences from University of California, Riverside in 1994. She was a D.H. Smith Conservation Research Postdoctoral Fellow from 2000-2003. Dr. Goodell has conducted extensive research regarding the interactions between plants and their pollinators, and how these interactions change as a result of human activities.

The series will continue in 2008 when Mitchell Lerner, Ph.D., associate professor of history, will discuss “Re-examining Lyndon Johnson” on February 7, followed by Ron Emoff, Ph.D., assistant professor of music, will present “Resurrecting Place in the Non-Nation: Accordions, Drumming and the Subsurreal on Marie-Galante, French Antilles” on May 1.
