Reflected
Blackness,
an exhibit
by artist LaTreice V. Branson, will be featured at LeFevre Gallery
at The Ohio State University at Newark from January 21 to February
29.
Branson will lecture at the LeFevre Gallery on Tuesday, January 29 from 3:30 – 4:30 pm. There will be an artist’s reception on Friday, February 8 from 6 – 8 pm at LeFevre Gallery. The show will close on Friday, February 29.
In Reflected Blackness, Branson uses photographs, a video installation and paintings. The work is mostly autobiographical. Exploring the many meanings and interpretations of blackness, Branson speaks to issues of identity and "blackness" in contemporary society.
“In this work, I am placing black on my body to acknowledge its pain and frustration for the freedom of its removal,” Branson said. “In this intimate ritual, I paint black on my body, hands and face with acrylic paint. I let the paint dry and peal it, smudge it and photograph my reflection in a mirror.”
The paintings contemplate the emotional experience of blackness.
“…Black can mask itself in shadow and become radiant in light, and in some paintings the light reflects so that it hinders you from seeing what is underneath. It is a passage through darkness into the light – a progression of intertwined thoughts and perspectives,” she said.
Branson graduated in 2007 with a Masters in Fine Art and Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Fine art from Ohio State, where she is now on faculty teaching digital and film photography.
