Meaning, Myth and Mystery

The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media Exhibition

September 12, 2007- Newark, OH- The Ohio State University at Newark is pleased to present the 25th Anniversary Regional Exhibition by Midwest Regional Artists of The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media. The exhibit will be on display in the LeFevre Gallery from Monday, September 17 – Friday, November 9. A reception is planned for Saturday, October 6, 5 – 7 pm in the Gallery. The public is invited to attend the reception to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.

Layerists create art by means of an additive-subtractive process in which the layer is considered a formal component of the artwork and is invested with a metaphorical significance. The layering technique is an allusion to processes in nature, such as sedimentation, erosion, reflection and refraction of light and recurrent cycles of birth, death and rebirth. Of particular interest to these artists are the theories that suggest an elemental unity of time and space.

Layering is not a style, nor is it uniform in any way. Though essentially diverse in media and manner, layerists share an attitude toward artmaking that is apparent in an exhibition of their work.

The gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am-8 pm; Saturday, 8 am-5 pm; closed on Sunday. For more information, please call 740.366.9369.
