Student Research Forum Winners Announced

The Ohio State University at
Newark faculty members J. Andrew Roberts, Ph.D. and
Paul D. Sanders, Ph.D. are pleased to announce the winners of the
2008 Student Research Forum.
Completed Research Poster category: First place went to Jeness Woodard, for “Similarities and differences in Nobel Prize Laureates in science.” Woodard won a $200 cash prize. Her faculty advisor, Christine Charyton, Ph.D., psychology, received $60 in prizes. Second place was won by Whitney Sims, for “Music and word recall: The strength of familiar melodies as mnemonic devices.” Sims won a $100 cash prize and her faculty sponsor, Melissa Jungers, Ph.D., psychology, won $50 in prizes. Both students also won up to $125 in bonus prizes/awards.
Proposal Poster category: First place was secured by Anna Hagley, for “Childhood and adult interpersonal relationships.” Hagley won a $200 cash prize and her faculty sponsor, Amy Brunell, Ph.D., psychology, won $50 in prizes. Second place went to Cathy Fetter, for “The decline of native bees in the Columbus metropolitan area due to factors including urbanization.” Fetter won a $100 cash prize and her faculty sponsor, Karen Goodell, Ph.D., evolution, ecology and organismal biology, won $50 in prizes. Both students also won up to $125 in bonus prizes/awards.
Oral Presentation category: First place went to Gloria Brown, who presented on “The relationship between studying music and students’ cognitive retention rates in college.” Brown won a $200 cash prize and her faculty sponsor, Diana Erchick, Ph.D., education, won $50 in prizes. Second place went to Sara Irvin for “Dangerous Women.” Irvin won a $100 cash prize and her faculty sponsor, Michael Mangus, Ph.D., history, won $50 in prizes. Both students also won up to $125 in bonus prizes/awards.
Roberts, an assistant professor of evolution, ecology and organismal biology, and Sanders, associate dean and professor of music education, coordinated the event. They were joined by faculty judges Jose Cabral, Ph.D., chemistry; Jill Coleman, Ph.D., psychology; Terri Hessler, Ph.D., education; John Hunter, Ph.D., evolution, ecology, and organismal biology; Melissa Jungers, Ph.D., psychology; Mitchell Lerner, Ph.D., history; and Christine Warner, Ph.D., education.
Community leaders Pat Gibson, Manager, Business Excellence, The Boeing Company and Carla Miller, R&D Leader, Residential Insulation, Owens Corning Science & Technology Center served as guest judges.
