2006-7 Faculty Lecture Series Opens with the “Spider Man”


Andrew Roberts to speak on wolf spiders at The Ohio State University at Newark

 

November 1, 2006- Newark, OH- The Ohio State University at Newark will open its 2006 – 2007 Faculty Lecture Series on Thursday November 16th with a lecture by Andrew Roberts, Ph.D., who will discuss Complex Signals and Communication in a Capricious Habitat William L. MacDonald, Dean and Director of The Ohio State University at Newark, will host the series. 

 

Dr. Roberts will explain how he and colleagues have used an invertebrate model system, the brush-legged wolf spider, for empirical testing of hypotheses concerning the efficacy of signal transmission in the environment and costs from natural selection associated with signaling traits.  The lecture will include a slide show and sound bytes.

 

An assistant professor in the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at Ohio State Newark, Dr. Roberts earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 2003 and has been an invited speaker at California State University Fullerton; Miami University, Oxford, Ohio; and for the Wittenberg University Speleological Society, Springfield, Ohio.

 

The lecture, which will include a question and answer period, begins at 7:00 pm in the Reese Center Ballroom, and will be followed by a reception.

 

Next in the series will be a February 1 lecture by Stephanie Brown, Ph.D., assistant professor of English, discussing History, romance and “real” black writers: the mysterious disappearance of Frank Yerby from the African-American literary canon The last lecture will take place on May 3, 30 Years of Hope, by Sara Staats, Ph.D., psychology coordinator.
