30 Years of Hope

Retiring Professor Sara Staats Closes 2006-07 Lecture Series

30 Years of HopeApril 19, 2007- Newark, OH- The Ohio State University at Newark will conclude its 2006 – 2007 Faculty Lecture Series on Thursday, May 3 with a lecture by Sara Staats, Ph.D. The lecture will begin at 7:00 pm in the Reese Center Ballroom and will include a question and answer session. A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Staats, a professor of psychology at Ohio State Newark, will discuss her research into hope, which she began at Ohio State Newark in the late 70s. She defined hope as “an interaction of wishes and expectations for self and others.” With a grant from the American Association of Retired People (AARP), Staats’ research turned to hope in the later years; she learned that there are techniques that can be used to increase hope and happiness.

Staats earned her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from The Ohio State University. Much of her research is associated with an interest in well-being. Other areas of research involve older women, the human-animal bond, creativity and emotion. In addition to introductory psychology and research courses in psychology, she teaches creativity and special topics. Staats will retire from Ohio State Newark later this school year after over 30 years of service.

William L. MacDonald, Ph.D., Dean and Director of Ohio State Newark, hosts the series, which features Ohio State Newark professors. MacDonald opened the current series in November 2006 with a lecture by Dr. Andrew Roberts, Assistant Professor, Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology. Dr. Stephanie Brown, Assistant Professor, Department of English, lectured in February 2007.
