Two Identical Town Hall Meetings Scheduled on Thursday, May 24 May 11, 2012—Newark, OH—The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College will hold two identical town hall meetings for the public to hear about and provide feedback on the draft for the Newark Campus Framework Plan on Thursday, May 24 at 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., in Founders Hall Auditorium, Room 1101, on the first floor, at 1179 University Drive.

Scholarship Campaign to Benefit Knox County Citizens Matching gift programs increase dollars

April 24, 2012—Newark, OH— Through the end of June 2012 community members can take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help residents of Knox County further their education at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) and/or The Ohio State University at Newark. During this time, contributions to The First-Knox National Bank Scholarship honoring former First-Knox President Gordon E. Yance will be twice matched, quadrupling the impact of each donor’s gift. First, to honor Yance’s visionary leadership and encourage more people to give, First-Knox Board member and Ohio Cumberland Gas Company President Mark Ramser will double the impact for Knox County students by matching all scholarship donations up to $50,000. Additionally, these gifts will then be matched again by the Next Generation Challenge Scholarship campaign. Taking full advantage of Ramser’s $50,000 match will create a $100,000 endowment generating $5,000 in scholarships annually in perpetuity for Knox County residents.

The keynote speaker, Gerard Baker, Ph.D., is the first American Indian (Mandan-Hidatsa) to serve as superintendent of a National Park, and will help to launch the Ancient Ohio Trail. Celebrate World Read Aloud Day at Ohio State Newark! by Francesca Amigo, Public Relations Specialist The Ohio State University at Newark
February 27, 2012- Newark, OH- Preschoolers and their parents are invited to celebrate World Read Aloud Day from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 in the Educational Curriculum Center at The Ohio State University at Newark. The Educational Curriculum Center (ECC) is located in Hopewell Hall, room 55. There is no charge to participate, and RSVP’s are appreciated but not required.
Candice Sheradin, director of the ECC, will read aloud to the children. “World Read Aloud Day is all about advocating literacy,” she said. “I thought it would be fun to bring together young children and their parents as a group, to share the joy of reading.”

This year’s event will feature keynote speaker Donald Ross, Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. Historical Commission Member, who will present "A Leading Brother in a Brotherhood of Brothers," a reflection on Dr. King’s accomplishments from an Alpha Phi Alpha perspective. He will discuss initiatives and relationships connected to the fraternity that were closely tied to students, student groups and student athletes at The Ohio State University. Several members of the campus community will also make presentations. The event is free and open to all. A reception will follow.

December 12, 2011—Newark, OH—Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) and The Ohio State University at Newark will host and be the major sponsors for an Ohio FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Robotics Regional Tournament to be held on Saturday, December 17, in the John Gilbert Reese Center. The event will include 12 central Ohio teams and marks the first time an FLL tournament will be held in Newark. The public is invited and welcome to attend the robot performance portion of the competition, which will be held from 1:45 – 3:45 p.m. in the Reese Center’s Alford Performing Arts Hall.

Quarter-to-Semester Conversion will bring Changes to Community Partners by Suzanne Bressoud, Assistant Director Marketing & Pubilc Relations, Ohio State Newark/COTC
October 20, 2011—Newark, OH— As The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) prepare to change from quarter-based academic calendars to semester-based academic calendars, both institutions realize the impact of this initiative for community partners. The first day of classes under the semester calendar will be August 22, 2012, approximately one month earlier than the previous start to autumn quarter. The semester system divides the year into 15-week fall and spring semesters. The quarter system is based on four 11-week terms. Organizations that offer internships, clinical placements, or flexible scheduling for employees attending classes should be aware that lengthier schedule obligations may be required for students to complete their academic assignments.

Ohio State Newark & COTC Volunteers Help Feed over 500 Households Campus hosts Farmers’ Market for Food Pantry Network - Licking Co. by Francesca Amigo, Public Relations Specialist The Ohio State University at Newark
September 22, 2011—Newark, OH— On Saturday, September 17, over 48 volunteers from The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) joined forces with the Food Pantry Network of Licking County (FPNLC) to help distribute fresh produce to needy Licking County families.
Faculty and staff -some of whom brought their children- came to the shared campus of Ohio State Newark and COTC to help the FPNLC’s Farmers’ Market. Cars lined up hours before the advertised 11 a.m. start time, and with boxes of produce organized in a long center row, slowly drove on either side, where volunteers loaded produce into the cars. In the past, recipients had to park and walk up to tables to retrieve the produce themselves.

Community Invited to Join Ohio State Newark Book Club Books and reception gift of Russell G. & Melissa Warner Bow by Francesca Amigo, Public Relations Specialist The Ohio State University at Newark
August 19, 2011- Newark, OH- Members of the community are invited to participate in the first Annual Community Book Club, hosted by The Ohio State University at Newark and made possible through the generosity of Russell G. and Melissa Warner Bow. The endowed fund supports the purchase of a set amount of books as well as an annual reception.
Club members will meet to discuss the book, “Outcasts United,” by Warren St. John, at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, in the John L. and Christine Warner Library and Student Center. Christine D. Warner, associate professor of education, will facilitate the discussion. “Outcasts United” is also the book being read by new students in OSU’s FYE (First Year Experience) program, making this a shared-book experience, community-wide.

July 20, 2011—Newark, OH—The Park National Bank and its associates have stepped forward together with a $1 million dollar commitment to support the Next Generation Challenge Scholarship Campaign. Through the generosity of Granville philanthropists J. Gilbert and Louella H. Reese, the Next Generation Challenge will match dollar-for-dollar all gifts and multi-year pledges up to $10 million made before June 30, 2012, to raise endowed funds to support scholarships benefiting students attending The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College in perpetuity.

October 4, 2010- Newark, OH- Psychology student Tracey Miser was the third place winner of the Psi Chi Guilford Award, which she received through Psi Chi (the International Honor Society in Psychology). Miser’s honor's thesis, which examined “Variations in SES (socioeconomic status), Home Environment, and Childcare on Child Language Abilities,” earned her the award. Miser was advised by Julie Hupp, Ph.D., assistant professor, psychology, The Ohio State University at Newark.

June 7,2010- Thanks to a partnership between the Licking County Convention and Visitors Bureau (LCCVB) and The Ohio State University at Newark’s Newark Earthworks Center, 987 students and adults visited the Newark Earthworks and Flint Ridge as scheduled field trips this spring. In fact, in 2010, school field trips to the Newark Earthworks and Flint Ridge doubled in attendance.
