K-12 Master of Arts (M.A.) Program

The Master of Arts (M.A.) program has been developed to assist practicing teachers and school administrators who are seeking a deeper understanding of teaching and learning contexts in K-12 settings. The K-12 M.A. program, offered in its entirety at Ohio State  Newark, incorporates both theory and practice to provide a broad knowledge frame on how society and schools are interconnected. In particular, it provides knowledge on the social context of teaching and learning in diverse settings in rural, suburban or urban contexts.

It is because our program values learners’ interests and practical knowledge that the Ohio State Newark K-12 M.A. program is a highly individualized program that attempts to meet the diverse needs of our students. Our M.A. is flexible in its design to allow the applicant to focus on his or her needs and interests. Applicants may desire to focus on one particular area, or several areas, such as specific curricular contents, child development, equity and diversity, serving special needs populations, or integration of content, just to name just a few.

Students admitted to the program are assigned a faculty advisor who provides guidance to the student throughout the program. This may include helping students on selecting courses, preparing for exams and, in general, helping students produce graduate-level work. Additionally, because of our small class size at Ohio State Newark, we are able to work individually with students – and we take pride in that work.

After completing the course requirements, students may either complete a thesis or opt for the non-thesis option, which may include completing a research paper, developing a portfolio, or taking an exam.

Our graduate program is a nationally accredited program which consistently ranks highly, making Ohio State University an excellent institution at which to pursue graduate work. The program includes nationally and internally recognized educators in the field of education and can also be an initial step towards a doctoral degree.
