Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is an approach to teaching mathematics where teachers utilize what they know about children’s understanding of the mathematics to select problems, pose those problems, question students, and facilitate discussion and sharing. The approach is a result of research led by Elizabeth Fennema and Thomas P. Carpenter at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Included here are links for suggestions for starting with CGI, pages of problems, a blank template, and a bibliography of selected CGI and CGI-friendly sources. For more information on OSU classes or independent workshops please email Dr. Diana Erchick at erchick.1@osu.edu.
