The annual income of the Robert A.
Barnes gift to The Ohio State University Developmental Fund
is to be used to provide an annual award for exemplary
teaching to an OSU faculty member enjoying an annual,
full-time teaching assignment at the Newark Campus.
1. The criteria and procedures for
selecting the recipient, the amount of the award, and the
method of presentation shall be determined by the chief
administrator of the Ohio State University at Newark in
consultation with the OSU Newark faculty.
2. The recipient shall receive a
personal plaque, and the individual’s name will also be
engraved on a plaque displayed at the Newark Campus. At the
option of the recipient, the award shall also consist of one
of the following:
a. A cash prize
b. An equal amount of cash for teaching-related travel
provided by the University
c. An equal amount of cash for teaching-related
publications or equipment provided by the University for the
recipient’s teaching area-such to remain the property of the
university
3. The Professional Standards Committee
shall select the recipient. Members of the Committee who
are candidates for this award will be replaced by faculty
selected by the Chair of the OSU Newark Faculty Assembly.
The recipient will be announced at the June faculty meeting.
Winners automatically become members of the subcommittee for
the following year’s selection process.
4. The Barnes award will honor a
faculty member who has established a record of excellent
teaching at OSU Newark for at least ten years.
5. Candidates for the Award are
nominated annually by an anonymous ballot at the beginning
of Spring Quarter. All full-time, OSU Newark faculty will
receive a numbered ballot and may nominate one colleague
from a list of all full-time faculty who have been teaching
at OSU Newark for at least ten years and have not received
the award within the past three years.
6. The Professional Standards Committee
will notify all nominees with a request for supporting
materials.
7. Supporting materials are limited to
the following:
a. Cumulative SEI report from past 10 years
b. Peer Review Letters from previous quarters or
Classroom Visitations by subcommittee members
c. Sample of course syllabi from various past quarters
d. Up to 3 letters of support from individuals
acquainted with your teaching
To
the best of their ability, faculty members must provide
addresses, phone numbers or e-mail addresses for students
who have sent unsolicited letters or e-mails. The
Professional Standards Committee may contact authors of
unsolicited materials to obtain additional information.
