    Artist's Statement:

I have had to work hard just to keep up with everyone else my entire life.  I want to be just as smart as everyone else; even though I am dyslexic I never let it stop me from doing something.  People don’t try to understand what it is just to simply read a book cover to cover and I want people to understand that just because I have a hard time doing that it doesn’t make me less intelligent.  People can say mean things just because they don’t understand the extent of the disorder.  In the past I have had people say mean things, like “I don’t know how to approach you” or “maybe you should just stop reading books.”  My goal is to prove it to people that I am just as intelligent as or even more intelligent than others who are normal.

My portfolio illustrates my struggle, my confusion, and my victories over dyslexia.  In my art I want people to see the meaning without it screaming at them.  I want to challenge people to think outside the box and outside what they’re used to.  I want people to take a small step into my world.  I don’t want people to stand back I want them to get really close trying to understand the all the details in the picture just like it is for me to pick up a book. I want to challenge everyone else’s world and possibly make them open their minds to different things.

For me art is therapy, it keeps me focused so I can work hard on other subjects.  Art is the foundation to my world; it’s like a solid concrete base so I can build magnificent things like towers and castles with tall spires.  Art is also my voice so I can try to make an impact on someone maybe not in a huge way.  It’s like the saying goes Rome wasn’t built in a day and I can’t change someone’s life over night, but I’ll keep trying.
